Maybe I'm the odd one out, but all I can think of is Nico Douga memes. To be fair, ND memes usually aren't as bad as most memes.

Oddly enough, I've only played 2 Bomberman games.  Hero for N64 and some Game Boy crossover with Wario.

Weird, given how big he was in the 90s.  He was almost Sonic and Mario level famous, ya know?

Crossover with Wario??! Dear lord, Bomberman, I didn't think you'd resort to that.

I wonder how big he was. Or if it wasn't simply clever marketing. Like, the sales might not stack up to mean anything, which would be why he's gone today. Even looking at the sales for Sonic and Mario there's this HUGE gap. Turns out Sonic never really had a leg up over Mario. Ever. It was just RADICAL advertising.

But who am I kidding, it's probably because Bomberman tried something 'new' with every damn game. He had no identity by the end of it.

I was looking at the comments on the Youtube video for the fight because I needed to know what the background looked like, and a surprisingly large amount of people as kids (Including myself) never found out Sirius was a bad guy. It was pretty neat to find that out later in life. Plus Regulus was always my favorite so it only makes it better that he joins the fight.

It's cool like Mega Man X because they added a Boba Fett. It's a formula that can't possibly fail!!

But it really is the coolest Bomberman design-wise. I'm looking at all the other games and none of them went for this style again, I'm not sure why. Second Attack comes close... but all the Maskers sort of look stupid. Regulus is the only thing that saves it in his edgy black armor, lol.

Man, I miss Bomberman.  I was WAAAY into playing the backlog of Bomberman games on the SNES when I used to use emulators.  Bomberman 5 was my favorite, though I had a great time with all of 'em (I gotta see how much a Bomberman 5 cart goes for, and mod my SNES to have it fit, 'cause that one was easily playable without reading Japanese and had a hell of a multiplayer mode).  Never did play 64 or many of the others that came out on later consoles (though I did play a few GBC and GBA ones).

Ha ha, I'd be interested to see the whiplash or what you expect out of Bomberman 64 if you're more familiar those games. By right of N64 passage, and being a series that did the jump to 3D, it of course had to be an adventure game, so you run around and throw bombs every which way instead of the grid formation, and bombs explode in big circles instead of pillars. Even the boss fights there's like zero obstacles on the field and you're just wildly kicking bombs at each other (Well, the boss fights with the other bombers; the actual big boss fights are like... standing on rafts and throwing bombs into a fish's mouth...?) It feels like more of a puzzle game, especially when you have the remote bombs that you pile on top of each other to build stairs out of to get to higher places. I'd hesitate to say it has a 'story', but the story kicks ass with good-turned-evil and betrayal and all that.

B-man 64 is the reason I went back and played Super Bomberman 1 ~ 5. Those... weren't what I was expecting, but they were still nice.

From what I've played on the GBC and GBA, it seems like Bomberman is always changing up the formula anyway, so I'd be open to it, if I find an easy way to play it (I don't have an N64 at the moment).  There was this one "Bomberman Adventure" type game on the GBA that had you leveling up and capturing monsters 'n such (though they just gave you various power ups for equipping them).  It was crazy, but I had a good time.

I know there were some famously bad 3D Bomberman games, but I trust your judgement and/or nostalgia for Bomberman 64 enough to give it a shot.  I mean, nowadays, anyway.  Back when the N64 was actually out, I probably would have scoffed at the mere sight of it, but such was the reaction of a teenager.  I did that to Kirby 64, for instance, and when I ended up playing that (not but a few years ago) I ended up LOVING it.  Bomberman 64 deserves the same chance.

Oh man, Bomberman went the monster capturing route? That would have deserved all my scoffs had I known it existed. The idea seems so needlessly trendy, you know, for 2000. It's like when I rolled my eyes at Mega Man Zero for including collectible Cyber Elves. I'd describe it as a 'stupid idea in a good game'.

Were there 3D ones famous for being bad? I know there's really mediocre ones, but nothing infamous that I'm aware of. Nothing Sonic the Hedgehog levels of bad. It's funny because I'd describe Bomberman 64 as more of a Kirby game than a Bomberman game. You go through levels the same way and you get all the little glowy things to fight the 'true' final boss, and of course there's cute-things-being-cool, i.e. Meta Knight.

It was worse than needlessly trendy, since they were just standard video game catalysts to allow you to get further.  But it was advertised like: "HEY look, monsters!  It's like grandma getting you the dollar store ninja-with-a-power-ranger-body instead of a real power ranger!" (though I totally love those ninjas and they played a big part in my childhood).  As for Mega Man Zero: I'm so glad they dropped the feed-the-elf thing, later one.  I LOVE those games, but leveling up those elves was just annoying and only served to stretch out the game.

I'm not sure if the 3D ones were famous for being bad, only that I never heard anything good about them.  On the other hand, I barely heard anything at ALL about the N64 games, so I just kinda assumed the silence meant bad things.  There were other 3D Bomberman games on other systems, weren't there?  Am I just thinkin' crazy?

But hey, you had me at "like Kirby" and mentioning Meta Knight in any capacity.  Just hand me a game and say "Meta Knight" and I'd be liable to play it just because I heard something I like before you handed to me.  I'm a simple man.

I do enjoy a good discount-super-hero. Or something that's doing a bad job of replicating a franchise; like a Street Sharks to your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (They truly were Jawesome). But maybe it bothers me more when a franchise that already has its own identity does, and specifically does, the whole monster-catching thing. I get this very Digimon vibe from it and imagine kids wearing giant goggles and oversized wrist-communicator doodads and awful Yugioh hair... and early 2000's CGI *shudder*. You're right about Bomberman though, each new game after 64 (or starting with 64 depending on how you look at it) tried to do something completely different. It became a mess of ideas... then Bomberman Act Zero happened. I don't know wtf happened there.

Yeah, I definitely lost track of where the series went but most of the games are mediocre. Bomberman 64 is really the only one that I actually like, but I can't say it's a forgotten gem or an amazing game. Wikipedia even says it got a 4.8/10 from someone at the time of its release. Yeesh. However it's certainly the best one on there. Bomberman Hero came after it and... that's a weird fucking game. Like, it's kind of amazing? The way Bomberman controls is a huge step up with his fluid movements and jumping and swinging his arms like he's going bowling with bombs... but, the design is so... weird... and... the soundtrack is really awful... and nothing looks right. Anyway, maybe you'll see one of these days.

Oh, I also forgot the music is what gives me a strong Kirby vibe. That might be why I said that in the first place. The levels have the sort of catchy cute music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qg0x0… and then the boss fights have the music with the really fast hectic beats in them: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeccV0… Which I always found funny in Kirby because that's a pretty slow moving game.

Yeah, the only time I've seen the "I'm going to do monster catching too!" thing work is with Dragon Quest Monsters.  That one had built-in recognizable monsters (well, for Japan, and then the tiny fanbase in the US) and worked in it's own unique systems in subsequent games (though I'm only quoting second-hand, since I haven't played them myself yet. My friend has been trying to get me to play for awhile, but it's more my wife's thing than mine).

I had heard of Bomberman Act Zero, and I remember some ads around the time it came out.  Just...a strange blip on the Bomberman timeline.  I love how it was on the Xbox 360 and only on the Xbox 360, to really drive home the extreme-ness and the americans-don't-like-cute-stuff thing that Xbox seemed to be going for at the time.  You like Halo?  Here's something that looks like Halo!  It's Bomberman, maybe, but who cares, it looks like Halo!  WOOO!

Anyway, I'll start with Bomberman 64 and see if I wana try the others, but from what I have been looking up, it seems like a lot of the nostalgia is centered around Bomberman 64.  Who knows, though: I've played so many Bomberman games, I wouldn't put it past me to try 'em all, someday.

I can see how the music has a Kirby feel!  I've always said that Kirby music sorta transcends the games themselves, especially the boss themes and end boss themes.  Everything is usually upbeat, but then the boss themes just go SUPER serious and totally awesome (with the top-most, for me, being Zero 2, from Kirby 64.  That one just bleeds last-ditch-effort-lets-do-this in the most spectacular manor, with a hint of sadness and hopelessness www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwpLSi… ).
