Looks good! It was a shame they never did much with the Cyan and Celes rivalry. I was hoping that would go somewhere :P

Good ol Mr Thou. He was the one I used the most. I always prefered melee characters.

An instance where the character sprite is FAR FAR superior to Amano's art in every way.  I remember my brother changing his name to "Chode" at the select screen after recoiling at the sight of Amano's art of his face, and his friend who was over at the time agreed with the assessment.  That initial impression colored my use of him in my childhood, and I never much liked his Charge Meter.  Waiting for a move in an ATB fight was bloody murder.  And I could never remember which level did what.

That said, though, his personal story ripped my heart out.  That was some next level shit, and anyone who claims that video games are not an art form that can evoke an emotional response can go hang.

Somewhat disappointed you didn't put in the ridiculous moustache from the artwork of his sprite form ( i.imgur.com/Kyjmc4b.jpg ), though I suppose the moustache isn't as pronounced on the actual sprite itself. Though you did give Terra the pink sash that wasn't on her actual sprite but was on her sprite artwork, so I figured you were using the sprite art as a reference. Ah well, no big deal. You said they would be accurate to the sprites, and aside from Terra's sash, they have been so far. And that suits me just fine. I just thought the moustache thing would have been funny, is all.

Ha ha, it's a compromise since his sprite has the Hitler 'stache, like how I drew Dorgan for FF5. They actually seem really similar with their wavy hair in sprite form. I shall now call him my Asian Dad!

I think he's using the sprites from the original format instead of the god awful pastel art from the cell phone version.

Who said anything about the cell phone version (which I agree is terrible in every possible way)? That artwork of the sprites has existed since the original game.

I'm kind of sad that the FF Wikis and informational sites have updated all their screenshots with those versions. You look up FF6 stuff now and you see THAT and it's... very wrong looking.

Yeah, the cell phone version is ugly as heck. It's also badly made too. Would you believe that the initial release misspelt the VERY FIRST instance of the word "esper"? (For the record, the lazy cell phone port of FF4 also had a typo on the VERY FIRST LINE OF TEXT IN THE GAME, introducing Cecil as the "Load Captain" of the Red Wings. What, is he in charge of cargo or something?)

Oh, but by far the worst thing about the cell phone version is the battle HUD. Instead of character names, HP, and an ATB bar, they decided to have panels with the characters' sprites and HP on them slowly rise from the bottom of the screen, and when they reach some arbitrary height, you can issue a command. Like everything else in this version of the game, it looks ugly and unprofessional as hell.

I knew about Espier, but Load Captain? :lmao: Cecil's career in porn is off to an amazing start.

I've never seen how the games look in action, but that does sound awful. The text boxes irk me in all the screen shots I've seen. The font choice and how close the font is to the borders is all wrong, and the transparent bubbles look pretty cheap. I've seen lots of people say it looks like a "very amateur RPG-Maker game", which I think is the perfect assessment. Sad part is RPG-Maker has better looking assets than that, so in a way it looks worse.

Also this is relevant since FF6 was announced on Steam today, and of course it's a port of the iOS version and not the SNES. I looked at the comments on reddit and a few sites for a bit, and there's a whole new group of people that are shocked at how bad the graphics are. That makes me feel better in a bizarre way knowing that the revulsion is so unanimous. I also saw the Magitek Armor scene at the beginning where they're walking toward Narshe, and oooooh boooooy does it look janky. It's like the graphics are struggling to exist...

All things considered, I just don't think Square knows what the hell they're doing anymore.

It feels very corporatey-higher-up of them to look at their most popular games and go "Hey, do that again!" to whatever team they cobbled together. Given, it looks like they're trying harder with FF7. People have been asking for that for years so they probably knew they had to put 'all the money' into it.

Poor FF6.

Until very recently I thought his name was pronounced cyan as in the color, and I'd done so during the years before I even knew it was a color (plus he's blue!). Then I read his article on the FF wiki and saw how it was really pronounced. It's like my whole life was a lie.

The name change makes sense to cut down on the silliness. A silliness akin to calling him Cilantro or Zesty Jalapeno, but, the pronunciation is kind of cool. Kai-an sounds a little more Asian than just a color. I never understood his name even when it was a color, like where it came from or why. Mega Man is cyan, but Cyan is... metal armor-ish color. Regardless, I will always call him by the color.

Why did Woolsey translated his name as Cyan?
His name is Cayenne...

Cayenne is Engrish for Cyan, which is a word that describes his color palette.  Your adherence here to the Japanese names does not do you or the characters any credit, as their original names do not translate nearly so well into other languages as you feel they do.  Exposing people to Engrish names that were created before Square learned to consider the world market for their releases during initial game production is a fairly criminal act, in my humble opinion, and would actually have a contrary effect to people enjoying the game and characters.

I would not take a character named Mash seriously.  Nor one named Tina over Terra.  Fantasy names need to have a bit of fantasy in them.

Ahem, first game in Tales of series was called Tales of Phantasia.
And other names of these games are pretty fantasy too. Eternia, Vesperia, Xillia, Zestiria...

He was my best character! He was my prime force against bosses! I charged him for 8 hits, and he just TANKED all enemies!

In the time it takes him to charge up to level 7 or 8, another character could help the other three in slaughtering the enemy team before they even get to move, thus eliminating the need to tank at all. Not to mention he's got a terrible base Magic stat.

Now that's a "my family and everyone I love are dead" kinda look!

...man, everything about Cyan is sad.  Especially when everyone he loves dies and he immediately has wacky adventures with Sabin.  Sabin gets to suplex a train, and Cyan can't even enjoy THAT, 'cause directly afterword he has to say good bye to his wife and kid AGAIN!  Twice!  Give that guy a break, writers!

I still kind of wish that "How do I manipulate this contraption?!" scene hadn't happened RIGHT after his family died. It's such a powerful scene, and then... hijinks. Maybe the train scene was there to be like "Ha ha, okay, but seriously guys".

It actually is, arguably, the best.  I could go on a multi-page tirade on how and why, with empirical evidence in addition to the typical emotional and personal opinioned arguments, but I won't.  Just saying, it's the best, because science. :D
